Week 1 Notes, Homework and Videos

NOTE 1:  ALL TRAINING SHOULD BE DONE WITH TRAINING COLLAR AND TRAINING LEASH ON.

NOTE 2:  DO NOT LEAVE TRAINING COLLAR OR TRAINING SLIP LEAD ON WHEN YOU ARE NOT ACTIVELY TRAINING YOUR DOG.

NOTE 3:  PLEASE PUT ON YOUR TRAINING COLLAR CORRECTLY.  ALSO BE SURE TO HOLD THE LEASH CORRECTLY.

This is a link to a leash article on our business blog.  Leashes How to Hold Them and How to Fold Them.

NOTE 4:  EVERYTHING THIS WEEK SHOULD BE DONE IN LOW AND EASY DISTRACTION, UNLESS IT IS TOO VERY EASY.  IN THAT CASE, YOU CAN SLIGHTLY INCREASE THE DISTRACTION FOR SIT ON THE DOG FOR INSTANCE.

NOTE 5:  THE GOALS ARE PLACES TO WORK TO IN THE FUTURE.  IF YOU DON'T MAKE THE GOAL, DON'T WORRY AS LONG AS YOU PUT IN THE WORK TOWARDS THE GOAL.  PLEASE REMEMBER THAT YOU CAN CALL OR EMAIL ME WITH ANY TRAINING PROBLEMS THAT COME UP IN BETWEEN LESSONS.

NOTE 6:  IF YOU DON'T GET THROUGH ALL THE EXERCISES IN ONE DAY, YOU CAN JUST BE SURE THAT THE EXERCISES YOU DID NOT GET TO ARE DONE THE NEXT DAY.   THE MOST IMPORTANT ONE, I THINK, IS THE MOLDED SITS.   HOWEVER, THEY ALL WORK TOGETHER TO START TO CHANGE BEHAVIOR.

NOTE 7:  WHEN YOUR DOG WORKS WITH YOU AT HOME, YOU MAY NEED TO GO DOWN IN TIME AND THEN BUILD BACK UP TO WHERE YOUR DOG WAS TRAINING WITH ME (IF YOU ARE IN PACK LEARNING AND BOARD & TRAIN).  THE DOG WILL WORK BETTER FOR WHOEVER THEY WERE LAST WORKING WITH, SO OFTEN THE TIME NEEDS TO BE BUILT UP BY THE OWNER TO HAVE THE SAME SORT OF WORKING RELATIONSHIP.

NOTE 8:  TRAINING CAN BE DONE IN SEPERATE SESSIONS.  I LIKE TO KEEP MY SESSIONS AT 15 MINUTES IN DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE DAY (EXCEPT FOR LONG PLACE).  OTHEWISE, YOU CAN BURN YOUR DOG OR PUPPY OUT.

NOTE 9:  MARKER WORDS ARE GOOD=GOOD JOB KEEP GOING YES=GOOD JOB YOU ARE RELEASED FROM THE EXERCISE AND NO=THAT IS NOT WHAT I AM LOOKING FOR.

NOTE 10:  BLUE TEXT GOES TO THE DIRECTIONS FOR THE EXERCISES.  [IT IS A LINK]

Obedience Exercises:

1)  Sits (with interim correction or collar correction if needed) outside in yard type distractions 5-10 minutes  Goal:  To do four in a row without needing any kind of correction (verbal or collar) for three sessions OUTSIDE in yard type distractions.  NOTE:  OUTSIDE, YOU CAN USE FOOD IF YOU NEED TO, BUT WORK TOWARDS FOUR IN A ROW WITHOUT NEEDING FOOD AND THEN GIVING REWARD AFTER THE FOURTH IF YOU NEED TO.  EVENTUALLY WORKING UP TO THREE SESSIONS OF 4 IN A ROW OUTSIDE WITHOUT NEEDING FOOD OR ANY KIND OF CORRECTION.

2)  Long Line Walking and Let's Go outside is best, and you can use food for this 15 minutes  Goal:  To be able to get four in a row clean let's goes for three sessions IDEALLY OUTSIDE.  Because this is new, you can definitely use food for this inside OR outside.

NOTE SAME VIDEO FOR 1) THE SIT ABOVE.  YOU CAN DO THESE TOGETHER OUTSIDE OR SEPERATELY (ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE HAVING PROBLEMS WITH ONE OR THE OTHER.

3)  Still sit stays  5-10+ minutes  Goal:  While it is below a minute, three sets of four in a row INSIDE.  Later on when it starts getting longer and at a minute, I just work for four in a row for one minute within a 5 minute period.  Remember this is an END OF THE WEEK goal, and you will want to be start at much shorter times, and build up slowly to a minute.  The most important thing is to be able to get 4 in a row easily at whatever time you are working on.

4)  Circle sit stays 5-10+ minutes  Goal:  Starting with one circle first, be able to get four in a row for three sessions INSIDE.  Once that becomes easy you can add a circle or a few, depending on how she is doing.  Remember this is an END OF THE WEEK goal, and you will want to be start at much shorter times, and build up slowly to a minute.  The most important thing is to be able to get 4 in a row easily at whatever time you are working on.

5) Recalls inside is best but on longer line 5-10 minutes (focus on form) Goal:  To be able to get four in a row cleanly for three sessions.  You need to use food with this one to guide her into the correct position.  DO NOT USE THE LONGER LINE LIKE I AM.  I DID NOT REALIZE HOW NEW THIS WAS WHEN I WAS DOING IT.
